Background and History
I like to give some background history because I feel it's important that parents know the type of person is teaching your child. As a result, enjoy the brief story of my life!
I was a "military brat" in that my father was in the Navy and we moved around every 2 or 3 years. I loved the fact that he was in the military and especially in the Navy because that meant we were always stationed near the beach! In fact, I was fortunate enough to live in Virginia Beach (2x), Key West, Rota (Spain) and I graduated from high school while living in Hawaii!
Knowing all this and the fact that I was in the military myself, you might think I joined the Navy but no; I get sick "as a dog" in the water and felt I couldn't survive in the Navy so I joined the Air Force instead. It was an awesome 9 1/2 years and made me into the type of person I am today. I was an Electronic Warfare technician and our jets (F-4, RF-4) would use our electronic systems to jam enemy radars so they couldn't be detected or shot down by missiles. I was fortunate to be able to go to many countries in Europe, Africa and even some of the Middle East and learned a great deal about other people and their cultures.
While in the Air Force, I met the love of my life (she was also in the Air Force) and we've been married for 37 years. In fact, she teaches a very similar class that I do here at Neuse River! We have two children aged 41 and 36 and three grand children Victoria (16), Fiona (13), and Brandon (11). Needless to say, they keep us hopping whenever we're around them and I now say raising kids "is a young person's game"!
Another thing I accomplished while in the Air Force was to obtain my Bachelor's Degree in Electronics Management from Southern Illinois University which also signaled the end of my Air Force career because I'd met my goals of travelling and getting a degree and felt it was time to move on. I graduated Summa Cum Laude (with highest honors) and am very proud of the fact that I only received a B one time throughout all of my college classes.
After that, it was time to enter the private sector and my wife and I worked in multiple Information Technology jobs ultimately preparing us for the time to become a teacher and giving our wealth of knowledge to your children. I have been at Riverwood MIddle School since the school opened and feel very blessed at that. This is the only school I have ever taught at and hopefully will be my first and only school. :)
Finally, some things I enjoy doing are:
